This has made banking easier and more convenient. However, it doesn’t come without its own demerits. Join us as we explore the pros and cons of online banking and how Emery Federal Credit Union can help you stay on top of your finances.

Why is Banking Online Convenient?

Why is Banking Online Convenient?

If you are contemplating switching from traditional to online banking, here are a number of things you will enjoy.

Check balances

Online banking lets you easily check your account balances without visiting a physical bank branch. Using a smartphone or computer, you can view your balance, transaction history, and pending transactions in real-time.

Automatically pay bills

Online and mobile banking allow you to set up automatic bill payments, which saves you time and ensures that your bills are paid on time. Automatic bill pay can be used for recurring bills like utilities, rent, and mortgage payments. It’s easy to set up, and you can cancel or change automatic payments at any time. By using online and mobile banking, you can manage your bills efficiently, avoid late fees, and maintain a good credit score.

Transfer funds

With online and mobile banking, transferring funds between your accounts and other people’s bank accounts is quick and easy. You can move money between your checking and savings accounts without visiting a physical branch. You can also use third-party services to send money to friends and family members almost instantly. The ability to transfer funds quickly and conveniently is a significant advantage of online and mobile banking.

24/7 access

With online banking, you can access your account at any time. This means you can handle your finances on your own schedule without worrying about bank hours.

Downloadable and printable statements

Online banking also allows you to download and print your account statements, which can be useful for budgeting or tax purposes.

Lower overhead fees

Mobile banking lowers overhead fees for clients by eliminating the need for many costly services associated with traditional financial institutions. For example, customers can avoid the costs associated with physical check-writing and bill-paying, as these transactions can be completed online at no additional charge.

What Are the Disadvantages of Online Banking?

What Are the Disadvantages of Online Banking?

Conversely, online banking also has its drawbacks, including:

Difficult to deposit cash
It may prove challenging to deposit cash in some online banks due to the absence of physical locations to receive the money. One might need to deposit the cash at a nearby bank and make a wireless transfer or incur extra expenses by purchasing a money order or making an in-person deposit with a partnering financial institution.

Technology disruption

Technical issues can lead to system outages, making accessing your account difficult. For instance, if your internet is disrupted or you have a power outage, it will be impossible to access your account. This can be a major inconvenience if you need to make an urgent transaction.

No personal relationship with the bank

Having a personal banking relationship can provide advantages over online banking, especially for larger needs such as business loans and customized accounts. Additionally, in-person banking can help avoid extended holds on money and keep track of important transaction details.

Limited services

Online and mobile banking have some limitations when it comes to certain transactions and services. For example, some transactions may require additional security measures or physical verification, such as cashier’s checks or wire transfers. There may also be limits on the amount of money that can be transferred or deposited through these platforms. It’s important to be aware of these limitations and to contact Emery Federal Credit Union if you have any questions or concerns.
